Cut Out Junk Food First - No More Treats
When humans eat too much junk food, an upset stomach is expected. And, if humans overeat, we become bloated and experience abnormal bowel movements.
Well, the same goes for dogs!
Unfortunately, many well-meaning owners are feeding junk food to their Goldendoodles every single day. Sometimes at every meal! This means that your Goldendodles stomach problems are not going to fully resolve until you remove the junk from their diet.
Here are some examples of junk food for dogs-
Table scraps or other human food scraps
Packaged dog treats (any treat you buy from the store off of a shelf)
Bacon grease or other leftover rendered fats from cooking
Low-qualtity kibble (kibble that doesn’t have meat listed as a first ingredient)
In order to rule out diet as being the primary cause of your Goldendoodle’s chronic diarrhea, you need to cut out all junk food from their diet for 3-4 weeks.
Feeding junk food to your Goldendoodle is not a healthy practice. You may think that you’re showing your Goldendoodle how much you love them by feeding them treats here and there, when in reality you’re putting their longterm health at risk.

Overfeeding is a common cause of Goldendoodle chronic diarrhea.
Overeating will cause digestive upset and eventually obesity. Obesity will cause other serious health issues, so overfeeding is something to avoid if you want the best for your Goldendoodle.
How Much to Feed Your Goldendoodle Each Day
It can be challenging to determine how much to feed your Goldendoodle each day. Every Goldendoodle has different caloric needs due to their size, age, and activity level.
When determining how much to feed your Goldendoodle, it’s important to first determine their caloric needs and then determine how much to feed them each day.
According to VCA Animal Hospitals:
The standard formula used for calculating the energy requirements of the average adult dog that lives inside your home, receives light daily exercise, and is spayed or neutered is:
30 x weight in kg (or pounds divided by 2.2) + 70 = daily caloric needs
Here are some general feeding guidelines for Goldendoodles of various sizes:
Mini (between 14-17 inches tall and between 26-35 lbs)- between 410-547 calories per day,
Medium (between 17-21 inches tall and between 36-50 lbs)- between 560-752 calories per day
Standard (over 21 inches tall and over 51lbs)- between 765-956 calories per day

Your bag of kibble will offer approximate feeding amounts by volume (usually cups). We are going to instead calculate your Goldendoodle’s daily rations based on their caloric needs.
Based on the information above, you should have an idea of how many calories your Goldendoodle needs each day.
To determine how many cups of food your Goldendoodle, find out how many calories are in each cup of dog food. You can find this information listed on your dog food bag on the nutritional analysis.
Now, divide your Goldendoodle’s daily caloric requirement by the number of calories in one cup of your choson dog food to find the correct serving size in cups.
Important: Your Goldendoodle’s daily serving size is the total amount they should eat per day. If you feed 2-3 meals per day, you need to split this total amount into smaller portions.
Keep in mind that dry kibble is very calorie dense. This means that dry kibble has more calories per cup than fresh cooked dietes or raw diets. This is why it’s so important to know what your Goldendoodle’s daily caloric needs are!
How to Choose a High Quality Dog Food
There are thousands of commercially available diets for dogs today. It can be a daunting task to choose a diet that is right for your Goldendoodle, your daily routine, and your budget.
Here are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind when shopping for the best food for your Goldendoodle-
Meat should be the first ingredient on the ingredient list.
The next two ingredients on the ingredient list should be meat and/or whole grains (wheat, corn, oats, barley, rice, etc.)
Legumes (beans, peas, alfalfa), squash (including pumpkin), and root vegetables (potatoes, sweet potatoes) should be limited, but some are OK.
Choose a food that already contains probiotics. These are usually listed at the bottom of the ingredient list.
Dry kibble is a great option for Goldendoodle owners with busy schedules and limited fridge and freezer space because it is nutritionally complete and shelf stable. Canned dog food is a great option for the same reasons.
Fresh cooked diets are a great option for Goldendoodle owners who have space in their fridge and freezer. To ensure that a fresh cooked diet is nutritionally complete, check that the food is labeled as meeting AFFCO or WSAVA guidelines. If the food does not meet these guidelines you will need to supplement your dog’s diet with additional vitamins and minerals to avoid deficiencies. The same goes for raw diets.

Healthy Treats for Goldendoodles
Your Goldendoodle does not need commercially available treats (think “milkbones”) or table scraps to have a balanced, healthy diet.
I know this concept is difficult for some Goldendoodle owners to cope with, but it’s reality. If you feed your Goldendoodle excessive treats and junk food you are putting their longterm health at risk.
Here are a few of my favorites-
Raw Fresh Blueberries - These sweet little treats are full of antioxidants and their small size makes them a great healthy treat option because they won’t contribute to overfeeding.
Raw Fresh Carrots - Whole carrots are best, but baby carrots are fine. Raw carrots are excellent for cleaning your Goldendoodle’s teeth! They are high in fiber and make for a great gut supplement, not to mention they are full of other vitamins and minerals.
Canned Sardines in Water - Avoid sardines canned in brine or oil, these are not good for Goldendoodles. Sardines in water are a nutrient dense healthy treat for Goldendoodles, full of protein and Omega 3 fatty acids. Only feed 1 small sardine per day at the most.
Raw or Gently Cooked Egg - I like to put a raw egg on top of my Goldendoodle’s kibble a few meals per week. The healthy protein and fat in eggs make eggs a great healthy treat for Goldendoodles. If you prefer to cook the egg before feeding, I recommend boiling. A fried egg will have too much oil and cause stomach issues.

Parasites and Gut Health
Parasites are everywhere. Parasites are commonly referred to as “worms.” They live inside every animal.
You can't prevent exposure to parasites (worms)--please don't try! Parasite exposure is unavoidable for your Goldendoodle. Goldendoodles love smelling the ground, licking and chewing on things that they find outside, and interacting with other dogs and animals. These are all ways that parasites are transmitted.
Symptoms of Parasite Overload in Goldendoodles
Parasites that call the digestive tract home will wreak havoc on your Goldendoodle’s digestive system when their is a parasite overload.
Symptoms of parasite overload in the gut include-
Goldendoodle chronic diarrhea
Goldendoodle diarrhea and vomiting
Goldendoodle diarrhea with blood
Weight loss
Lethargy
Eventually your Goldendoodle will become anemic and the parasite overload will begin to cause serious health problems.
How to Diagnose Parasite Overload in Goldendoodles
Parasite overload must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Your vet will need a stool sample in order to determine if your dog has parasites. They will examine this stool sample or send it off to a lab to make a final diagnosis, and then prescribe an appropriate deworming medication.
How to Treat Parasite Overload at Home
Keeping parasites at bay requires regular preventative treatment for the life of your Goldendoodle. This is a normal part of pet ownership. Don’t wait until your Goldendoodle is ill to seek treatment!
I have good news! You can keep parasites from harming your dog using an affordable at-home treatment. In fact, I believe that every single dog owner should be following this treatment protocol.
Twice yearly, once in the Spring and once in the Fall, is the best cadence for this protocol.
Panacur C, which contains fenbendazole, is my favorite over-the-counter product for parasite treatment. You can purchase this at most pet stores, but I find that purchasing online from Amazon is the simplest and most affordable way to purchase.
Each box of Panacur C (fenbendazole) contains three foil packets of medication, representing one packet for each daily dose (three days).
To find the correct daily dose of Panacur C for your Goldendoodle, first determine their weight. Next, purchase the box(es) of Panacur C that match the weight of your Goldendoodle. You may need to purchase several boxes to ensure your Goldendoodle receives the correct amount of medication.
Here are some general guidelines-
Mini Goldendoodles (between 26-35 lbs)- 1 green box of Panacur C (treats 20lbs) + 1 yellow box of Panacur C (treats 10 pounds), feed one packet from each box once daily for three days in a row
Medium Goldendoodles (between 36-50 lbs)- 1 orange box of Panacur C (treats 40lbs) + 1 yellow box of Panacur C (treats 10 pounds), feed one packet from each box once daily for three days in a row
Standard Goldendoodle (over 51lbs)- 1 orange box of Panacur C (treats 40lbs) + 1 green box of Panacur C (treats 20lbs), feed one packet from each box once daily for three days in a row
Panacur C (fenbendazole) is a very safe drug. Don’t worry about giving a little bit too much. But, if you give too little, you will not kill all of the parasites in your Goldendoodle’s gut.
You must give the corrent minimum dose (daily dose) of Panacur C to your Goldendoodle once a day for three days in a row in order for it to be effective. This treatment routine should be performed every six months for the life of your Goldendoodle.
If Giardia is common in your environment, and if your dog has suffered from Giardia infection in the past, increase the treatment from three days in a row to five days in a row.

I feel that genetics are a largely overlooked cause of Goldendoodle stomach problems. Nobody wants to learn that the cause of their Goldendoodle’s chronic diarrhea may be something out of their control—genetics.
I’m not suggesting that you call up your breeder and blame your Goldendoodle’s sensitive stomach for poor genetics; however, I am encouraging you to explore this root cause as a possible diagnosis for your pup.
We will discuss food allergies in this section because food allergies are typically a genetic issue.
How Are Genetics Related to Goldendoodle Stomach Issues?
Let’s first consider stomach issues in humans. Many people are genetically predisposed to having sensitive stomachs, or stomach issues like IBS. This is typically referred to as ‘having a family history’ of these issues.
The same phenomenon happens with Goldendoodles! (well, dogs in general)
Unfortunately, due to unscrupulous breeders, sensitive stomachs and chronic diarrhea due to genetic factors, including food allergies, have become highly prevalent in Goldendoodles. Goldendoodles who have sensitive stomachs or food allergies should not be allowed to reproduce, as these issues are passed on to offspring and often worsen with each generation.
Too many of us know how terrible it is to deal with the mess of Goldendoodle diarrhea. Now, imagine how sick and miserable your Goldendoodle must feel when they’re experiencing issues such as chronic diarrhea, vomiting, or even diarrhea with blood.
Chronic Diarrhea Caused by Inherited Food Allergies
Some common symptoms of food allergies are hair loss and itching. However, chronic diarrhea and upset stomach are also common symptoms of food allergies in Goldendoodles.
Food allergies are an inherited issue and are different from food sensitivities. Food sensitivities are the result of a low-quality diet. Food allergies are caused by genetic factors that can’t be changed.
Diagnosing Genetic Goldendoodle Stomach Issues
Most often, Goldendoodle stomach problems are multifaceted. This means there are several root causes, not just one. Be sure to explore whether your Goldendoodle’s chronic diarrhea is caused by parasites or diet before assuming the issue is genetic.
